Jewel of the day: Sherman Crystal Necklace

There’s something to be said for clear crystal jewelry. Yes, colours can be spectacular and flashy, but plain old rhinestones can pack a big punch.

This collar from Sherman is one of my favourite pieces. In fact, I’m wearing it in my passport photo. It’s just a swath of glittery goodness, likely made in the late 1960s, possibly early 1970s. Sherman used Swarovski crystals and heavily plated his pieces. Despite its age, it looks brand new.

Sherman was in business from the late 1940s until he went bankrupt in the early 1980s when rhinestone jewelry fell out of favour as more women entered the workforce. Today, people wear what they want, including sparkly jewelry. If you want to know more, contact me to ask about the book I co-wrote about him, Sherman Jewellery: The Masterpiece Collection.
