This bracelet by Van Cleef and Arpels, known as the Roses Bracelet, can be seen as a piece instrumental to the Art Deco movement. It won the company the grand prize at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925. Van Cleef notes, “Its aim was to establish the pre-eminence of French taste and luxury goods along with the formal repertoire of the Art Deco movement. French displays dominated the exhibition and Paris itself was put on show as the most fashionable of cities. At the time, the exhibition had an immediate and worldwide impact, which would exalt Van Cleef & Arpels’ international fame. In fact, Van Cleef & Arpels won the Grand Prize with a set that would become historic, the exquisite Roses bracelet and brooch created in 1924 especially for this exhibition. The bracelet features red and white roses, illustrates a floral style focused on Nature – inspiration very dear to the Maison—and simplicity. It is composed of 463 round brilliants, 293 rubies, and 108 emeralds mounted on platinum, the most precious of metals.”
