Jewel of the day: Theo Fennell Rose Gold Poppy Phi Pendant

Noted British jewellery designer Theo Fennell has several pieces featuring poppies, which seemed an appropriate visual for today. Marked as Remembrance Day in Commonwealth countries (and Veterans’ Day in the US), it is frequently commemorated by the wearing of a poppy, an image from the World War I poem “In Flanders Field.”

Though the poppy symbol has recently become controversial (with some choosing to wear a white poppy as a symbol of peace rather than the red flower, which they see as a symbol of war), Fennell draws on the poppy’s dual meaning of life and death.

Here, he uses it in a rose gold pendant adorned with green enamel, representing evening and night. Phi, he explains, “is the ancient Greek symbol of harmony in all things and, therefore, a sign for our times.” The pendant is one of a limited edition of 25, and sells for £5,950 on Fennell’s web site.
