Jewel of the day: Vela NYC Georgian Black Dot Paste Earrings

Georgian paste is revered by collectors. These were an early effort to mimic diamonds, and made of glass backed with foil to reflect and refract light. In the lower candle and gas light of the era, they were a great substitute for the more precious and very rare diamonds. The painted on black dot enhanced the illusion of depth to the stone and mimicked the cut of diamonds of the era..

These earrings, available from Vela-NYC, are made with silver (typical for the time) with gold hooks. They sell for USD$925.
