For the last few years, Pantone has picked an official colour. This year, they have designated radiant orchid as the 2014 hue. You can read more about it here.
This becomes a bit of a marketing bonanza for various companies. Sephora works with Pantone to do colour collections for makeup, and various others shill the colour as well for home decor, clothes and apparently jewellery.
Tresor offers this pink sapphire ring, set in 18k yellow gold, through Max and Chloe. They say it’s a sapphire, but when you use the zoom feature on the site, the striations in the stone make it look more like a pink rutilated quartz. It’s available for USD $$1,078.

I think the orchid color is a very pretty color & a great choice by Pantone. It’s not a very loud color but at the same time it brings life to a space when used in home decor & to an outfit when used in jewelry. I think it’s a fantastic color choice.
I like it better than last year’s emerald!
