Clearly, skin is in on the red carpet this year. I just looked through about 75 red carpet photos and found not a single celeb wearing any piece of jewellery of note. That is, when I saw jewellery at all. It’s a sad day when even Helen Mirren appears to be wearing nothing more than a pair of demure earrings and a couple of little rings.

I spotted an oversized cross on Madonna (wearing an awful Reem Acra dress) – yawn. An interesting but hard to notice necklace on Frieda Pinto. Some intriguing looking bangles on style boundary pusher Tilda Swinton. But … that was it. Especially egregious was the lovely Rooney Mara, who appeared to be wearing not a single item of jewellery at all.

Given that the treasures of the late Elizabeth Taylor were only recently auctioned off, it brings to mind that the Hollywood of old would not have shown up at a red carpet event with bare decolletage, arms and ears.

I am sad. And hoping for better at the Oscars – but not expecting much.
