Jewel of the day: Meyle and Mayer plique a jour owl locket

This is a gorgeous and rare sterling and plique a jour enamel locket. Plique enamel is the most fragile, as each cell is filled with translucent glass and the result is like a stained glass window. It’s not all that common to find one in such good condition, with no breaks or cracks to the enamel. It’s possible there was a mirror inside at one point. The owl is holding a natural baroque pearl in its claws. Set with the dragonfly mark for Meyle and Mayer of Pforzheim, Germany. Likely late Arts and Crafts/early Art Nouveau period. This own has since flown off to a new home…

  1. Full of charm, but plique a jour means it is transparent to the light of day, the enamel has no backing; this looks to have a silver back, and is ‘painted on’ the molded silver owl form, then baked; not plique a jour which would leave the wings very thin, and see-through, like a dragonfly. The enamel is applied in small compartments, as feathers, but it is not cloisonne, filled wire enclosures, either.
Nice piece, where was it sold?

    1. Thanks for your comment. There was definitely no backing to the enamel. It was purchased in Toronto and sold in the US Midwest.

  2. Oi, eu sou do Brasil. Eu tenho um broche assim. Gostaria de saber quanto esse foi vendido. Obrigada.

    1. It depends on what it is, design, and condition. The enamel pieces can go for less than the plique a jour pieces. I’d take it to a reputable antique jeweller for their opinion. I’d also try to see if you can find similar examples that have recently sold. Good luck! They are really wonderful pieces.
