Jewel of the day: Chris Cook Raven Ring in Sterling Silver

This ring from Chris Cook comes from the site Spirits of the West Coast, which showcases indigenous craftspeople.

Cook’s bio: Chris descends from the Thunderbird Clan of the Namgis tribe (in Alert Bay) of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation. He grew up surrounded by traditional culture and is a Potlatch Chief in his traditional big house.

He studied metalworking in high school and silversmithing at Camosun College while working on his undergrad from the University of Victoria. He has been expanding his metal working skills by travelling to New York and Tuscany, Italy to study with world renowned Bulgarian Silversmith Valentin Yotkov.

Chris Cook lives and works in Alert Bay, BC, Canada.

The raven also holds special significance. “Mischievous and curious, the raven plays many important roles in Pacific Northwest Coast Culture. For some, he symbolizes creation, transformation, knowledge, prestige as well as the complexity of nature and the subtlety of truth. He also symbolizes the unknown and shows that every person sees the world in a different way.

The ring is about 3/4 of an inch wide in the front and tapers down to about 1/4 of an inch in the back.

As these rings are hand-carved, the design may vary slightly from the images.
