Jewel of the day: Antique Opal Bead Necklace

Opals are my favourite gemstone. I love the colour play and the fact that you see something a bit different in them every time you look.

This antique necklace from Antique Jewellery Online is no longer available but it’s so pretty, particularly the oval cabochon clasp.

They note, “A glorious antique Victorian opal bead necklace from the late 19th Century made up of natural opal beads with faceted rock crystals in between. The opals graduate in size from 0.25ct to 1.5ct at the bottom and are glossy and smooth with a magical play of colour that intensifies to a bright orange in the sunlight.

Opal is the birthstone of October. Their magic has been revered throughout history, desired for their enchanting rainbow of colours that flow and dance across the surface of the stone, evoking the beauty of planet earth or the aurora borealis, with a burning orange sunset glowing behind.

It’s an enchanting piece and held by an 18ct gold box clasp complete with French owl mark and another magical opal bezel set on top.”

It was priced at USD$3,751.
