Jewel of the day: Edwardian Opal & Diamond Drop Earrings

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you may know I love opals. These Edwardian earrings from The Antique Jewellery Company showcase two opal beads. The site explains, “A fabulous pair of opal and diamond drop earrings that were made circa 1910-1920. They are 15ct gold with platinum and millgrain detail. The two opals are very well matched stones and display vivid flashes of blue, green and red. When Australian opals appeared on the world market in the 1890’s, the Hungarian mines spread the idea that they were not genuine, probably because gems with such brilliant fire had not been seen before. Australia eventually assumed the mantle of premier opal producer of the world, becoming famous for Lightning Ridge’s colourful and rare black and crystal stones. So they were an exciting new stone and became very fashionable in the Edwardian period. The opals in these earrings are stunning examples of Australian opals.”

They are priced at £3,950.
