Tiara fever has been rife leading up to the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Since Ms. Markle has no tiaras of her own (yet) there was speculation that Harry’s uncle, Earl Spencer, might lend her the family diamond tiara, so famously worn by Diana at her own wedding and other occasions.
Bear in mind that Kate Middleton did not don this particular headgear (the Queen loaned her another piece) on her own wedding day. It’s been worn by Spencer women at their weddings since 1919, when crown jewellers Garrard used some pieces, later augmented in the 1930s. Meghan’s ring already incorporates some of Diana’s diamonds, so it’s possible Harry will want a memento of his beloved mother on the day of the ceremony. My guess is if she does wear a jewelled headpiece, it will be something more modest, as befits the non-aristocratic wife of the second son of the heir. We’ll know today!
