Jewel of the day: Ursa Major Vidal Stud Earrings

It’s hard to come up with a new take on the stud earring, but Ursa Major has taken inspiration for these, dubbed Vidal, from 1970s Brutalist architecture.

Ursa Major is the name of a sailboat designer Kate Jones lived on as a child. From her about page, “With a childhood somewhere between the Caribbean and Maine, moving from a sailboat named Ursa Major, to a house on a salt marsh, the inspirations for this work are wide and varied but always reminiscent of the stillness of the sea.

Ursa Major jewelry was started in NYC by designer, Kate Jones, in 2009.  Currently based in San Francisco, all jewelry is handmade in house using the most careful eye and finest materials…. Designed to be contemporary, yet timeless.  Subtle, yet distinct.”

The designer notes, “Taking a cue from Brutalist architecture and design these multi functional studs resemble tiny cityscapes.  Measuring 8.5 mm in diameter with 2 mm removable diamond studs. The base is 10k Yellow Gold and the diamond settings and posts are 14k Yellow Gold.” These sell for USD $620.

  1. As a design student at university, many moons ago, I created a 3-d world from Corian and clear white plexiglass. It was an homage to the great architect Walter Gropius, master of steel and glass curtain buildings. Now available in stud earring jackets–fun!
