Jewel of the day: Christie’s Arts and Crafts Fire Opal Pendant

Fire opals are an unusual choice for a stone for a piece of the arts and crafts era. I would have though amber or garnet would have been more likely (and easily available) choices for the period.

Christie’s is auctioning this piece on Oct. 9 (so you still have time to bid!); the estimate is £1,200 – £1,500. Oddly, for an auction house, there are no other details about the piece. Nothing about metal, other stones, maker’s marks, country of origin, etc. It looks as though it may have tiny diamonds in it, and burnished or just in need of cleaning gold. It may also be gilt metal. Despite its age, definitely still a very wearable piece today.
