I first wrote about this necklace last year prior to its auction at Christies. It was expected to fetch between USD $200,000 and $300,000. The hammer price (plus buyer’s premium and taxes) was USD $267,750. Briefly, this was a flea market find, whose buyer paid $15 for it. Don’t we all dream of something like this happening to us (or use it for justification on those flea market and antique mall jaunts)? You can read my original post here.
As a further update, web site Artsy is building a Calder info library; you can find history, biographical info, currently for sale items and more (though alas, jewellery remains scarce!)

Alex Calder – now you are talking.
I owned a tapestry of his for 30 years and I still have one of his original watercolours in my home.
