Jewel of the day: David Webb Tool Chest Nail Link Bracelet

David Webb notes on their home page that they adopted the nail form as a signature design in 1971. Cartier has had recent success with their Juste un Clou nail bracelet and ring, but Webb wants you to know they spotted it and used it first. As ever in jewellery, everything old is new again and it’s fairly difficult to really know who called it first, as forms and designs tend to appear and be adapted and readapted over and over.

David Webb has reissued some designs, including this Tool Chest Nail Link Bracelet. A unisex piece, it is made with hammered 18k yellow gold, and sells for USD $12,300. Much as I like this, it is probably meant for people less clumsy than I; more than a few pieces of my clothing would get shredded by those pointed nail ends!

  1. I am reticent to give this piece a “star” rating. Though I am an ardent fan of David Webb’s work, I do have reservations. Jewelry should be as easy to wear as an article of clothing, something to be donned effortlessly and worn without concern. This bracelet seems a product of somewhat poor planning. It will no doubt catch on so many garments, especially this season since loopy, oversized sweaters are so important. Horny and spikey things have been trending for several seasons now. I, for one designer, strive toward timeless statements that don’t create pulls in costly garments.
