Jewel of the day: Sweden’s Cameo Tiara

Sweden’s Princess Madeleine marries British-American financier Chris O’Neill on June 8 and it’s fairly likely she will be wearing this tiara when she walks down the aisle.

The Cameo Tiara was owned by Empress Josephine of France, who acquired it in 1809 from her husband Napoleon (before she was traded in for a younger, blonder model). It has since become something of an unofficial bridal tiara in the past century and it is quite likely that Madeleine will also wear it, as did her mother and sister and others in the Bernadotte family. I can’t say I find it all that fetching; the cameos look really top-heavy and I think it just dominates the wearer, rather than providing an accent.

But it isn’t as though the Swedes have a jewel box as vast and lavish as other royal families so they may have to “make do” with this one. Regardless, it’s likely Madeleine will make a lovely bride regardless of how she decides to top off her gown.

Below, a closeup of the tiara as worn by her sister Crown Princess Victoria on her wedding day.
