While rummaging around on the Alexis Bittar web site, I was quite surprised to see a category of antique and vintage jewelry and accessories for sale. (I was also surprised that there are no photos of the backs of the pieces, fairly critical when selling/buying vintage online, and no discussion of marks, makers, etc.)
These earrings are made out of lava, a common material in the late Victorian period, given the fascination with the many eruptions of Mt. Vesuvius in the 19th century. Most lava pieces I have seen had a darker, more putty-like look to them, and lava was typically used as a medium for cameos, often brought home by wealthy visitors on their Grand Tours of Europe. Although it’s certainly possible these are made of lava, I do wonder if they are made of another material.
The depiction of cherubs and amphorae are two other popular Victorian motifs, and I could see these having been worn with an equally elaborate necklace and bracelet. I kind of love the cranky expression on the cherub on the left, I have to say. They almost look like a couple that’s been married too long.
These are available on Bittar’s site for USD $2800.
