Jewel of the day: Van Cleef & Arpels tiara for Princess Grace of Monaco

Van Cleef & Arpels made this tiara for Princess Grace of Monaco to wear to the ball celebrating the (ill-fated and short-lived) wedding of her daughter Caroline to Philippe Junot in 1978.

Made from a necklace, as is quite common with tiaras which are often convertible into other forms of jewellery, it holds nearly 78 carats of white diamonds. The Grimaldis are not known for having lavish jewels, but this piece would have been quite at home on the dance floor among the other tiara-clad guests invited to the wedding. Interestingly, and reflective of the times, it has the regal bearing of a tiara without the stuffiness. When Charlene Wittstock married Grace’s son Albert, she wore a tiara that also defied convention in its wave form, a nod to her past as a competitive swimmer.
