Jewel of the day: Me to We Acacia Leaf necklace

Me to We works with indigenous artists (in this case, Kenyan) and helps create sustainable businesses. This necklace is made of leather, brass and beads. Me to We describes it this way:

The acacia tree, standing solitary in the Kenyan Mara, has long symbolized strength, endurance and hope. The mamas, as our Me to We artisans are affectionately known, spend their afternoons beading in the shade of these trees using traditional techniques and skills passed down within their communities. Working with Me to We and having access to fair trade markets, the mamas are able to earn a fair livelihood and create hope for their children and their communities. Together, under the acacia tree, they are creating a better future for themselves and their communities, one beautiful beaded creation at a time.

The Acacia Leaf Necklace is made of soft leather that is hand cut into its unique leaf shape, and then beaded with pewter Czech glass beads, which are available locally like they have been for over a century. The leaf hangs horizontally and is attached to a brass chain that is adjustable for maximum flexibility and style.

The necklace is available for Cdn $39 on the Me to We website.
