I was too depressed to blog about the Emmys last night once I realized how little jewellery was in evidence. Yes, there was a bracelet here, and a pair of anemic earrings there, but for the most part, actresses walking the red carpet could be summed up by January Jones’s austerity (when it came to jewellery):

Yes, the dress was busy but imagine how spectacular a diamond riviere necklace or pair of drop earrings would have looked. Could you see screen stars of the 40s and 50s leaving for an event looking like this?

I despair. Something tells me the rest of this awards season isn’t going to be any cheerier. But somewhere, Morticia Addams is smiling.
