Jewel of the day: Eina Ahluwalia Kirpan necklace

A very interesting and visible protest against domestic violence, especially coming as it does in jewellery meant to be worn on a wedding day. This necklace, which incoporporates the Sikh kirpan, or small dagger, also is meant to serve as a very visible statement.

In the words of the designer, Eina Ahluwalia, the piece is described this way:

Traditionally, a Kirpan is a a small sword worn on the body as a religious symbol for the Sikhs – a warrior race that originated to protect oppressed communities from the Mughal rule in India.

We chose to use this symbol of protection, as a neckpiece, to portray our stand against Domestic Violence. A piece that must inspire every woman to Love, Respect & Protect herself even if someone else doesn’t.

“I vow to make excuses when you humiliate me in public. To forsake my friends and family when you isolate me. To value myself less when you belittle me. I vow to blame myself when you hit me. And to fear for my safety and the safety of my children. Till death do us part.”

Presenting an alternate image of the new Indian bride. I am Durga & Kali. Love, Respect & Protect me. Or else I will.

Available from the designer’s web site for €410; it is made of gold plated brass, is part of the wedding line, and custom-made.
