The jewels auctioned for charity last week by Lily Safra fetched just under $38 million – all proceeds went to charity. Originally, 20 groups had been chosen, but given the very high return, 12 additional charities were added.
The ruby JAR brooch I wrote about? Auction estimate was $1.2-1.5 million (USD). Hammer price was $4,319,591, including buyer’s premium. The 32.08 carat Burmese ruby and diamond Chaumet ring below sold for the highest recorded price for a ring of its kind, at US $6,736,750. Records were set at this auction but the best thing is that so many charities benefited. This is one time I can get behind high jewellery prices. Bravo, Mme. Safra.
