Elizabeth Taylor’s La Peregrina pearl necklace breaks auction record

Selling at auction for a record-breaking $11.84 million, the famous La Peregrina necklace has become the most expensive pearl sold at auction. Elizabeth Taylor’s estate opened for bids tonight at Christie’s, and this necklace went well over the $2-3 million estimate.

Not surprisingly, other items also fetched way above estimate. The famed Krupp/Elizabeth Taylor diamond sold for over $9 million, a nice return on Burton’s original purchase price of around $300,000.

Taylor believed jewels should be worn so I hope the new owners get more pleasure out of their new acquisitions than just keeping them locked in safety deposit boxes.
