Madeleine Vionnet founded her storied design house in 1912 in Paris. Known for bias-cut, Grecian style clothing at a time when women’s wear was fairly constrained, she also allowed her clothing to outline a woman’s curves, fairly revolutionary for the era. She is best known for her sleek Deco era dresses, with halter tops and cowl necks a staple worn by stars like Marlene Dietrich and fashionable women of the time. The business was closed in 1939; at its height, she employed 1,200 seamstresses. She died in 1975 at the age of 98, but her brand lives on, revived in 2008 by two Italian businessmen.
