Jewel of the day: Duchess of Windsor Cartier flamingo clip

This brooch is perhaps the most famous piece of jewellery associated with the Duchess of Windsor. Made in 1940 of diamonds, sapphires, citrine, rubies and emeralds, and showing the flamingo in the characteristic one leg crooked pose, it has launched many imitations and is indelibly linked to the Duchess. The pin was originally sold in 1987. Its current estimate is 1,000,000—1,500,000 GBP. You can read more about key pieces in the auction here, and see the auction listing itself on the Sotheby’s website. The 1987 selling price was 497,942 GBP; the seller has not been disclosed, nor was he or she named in 1987. The clip is a magnificent representation of the jeweller’s art.
