Jewel of the day: Samesky glass bead bracelets

When charity and beauty combine, you get something like these wondrous glass bead bracelets. Made in Rwanda by women affected by the genocide that tore apart that country (many of them infected with HIV as a result of the brutal campaign of rape), the website notes, “Bracelets are made of handblown glass beads (165-180 depending on size) and are crocheted on a complimentery colored, non stretch cord. Sizes include Small, Medium, and Large by special order. Smalls fit 6.0″ – 7.0″ wrists and mediums fit 7.0″ – 8.0″ wrists. Over time the bracelets will stretch to fit and accommodate the size of your wrist.” These retail for USD $160, but there are very sweet bead on cord bracelets for $40. See more here.
