Tomas Maier infused his fall 2010 RTW collection with the purple and green irridescent sheen of the back of a beetle. So it is only fitting that the accompanying jewelry is rich with scarabs. Real scarabs were commonly used in Victorian jewelry, and again when Tut’s tomb was discovered, there was a fascination with all things ancient Egyptian. So to see the scarab form used in adornment is not new.

This Victorian necklace of actual scarab beetles set in brass shows the relatively small scale that was used. And you can see from the open backs the beetle carapaces.

Though it’s difficult to tell from this runway photo, my guess is that this is several necklaces worn at once, a few that are opera length and one that is a long beetle pendant. Though I can see how this fits thematically with Maier’s collection, due to the scale of the insects, it may come across as more Addams Family than perhaps was intended.
